because it was so precise, he did not answer all
questions. But I think the best assessment in a way
for McLuhan is to take a line from him where he
said, “As Plato surfed the wave from orality to
literacy, as Descartes surfed the wave from
manuscript to printing press culture,” McLuhan
surfed the electric wave from print to electronics
and computers, thus bringing us to our own day. A
number of scholars have picked up his ideas on
this media-morphosis. Joshua Marowitz is a good
example. Here’s an American scholar who’s taken a
look at how did television really effect its cultural
transformation, what was it about it? And again,
Marowitz admits that he’s inspired by McLuhan but
